Valerie Rushmere
Belly Dance Instructor
Valerie Rushmere has been a dancer, singer,
and teacher in the Philadelphia area for more than 20 years.
She currently owns and operates Studio 1831, a dance, yoga,
and fitness studio in Philadelphia's Art Museum area. In
addition to teaching a full schedule of classes in her studio,
she is artistic director, choreographer, and founder of the
Shake Charmers Dance Company.
She has performed both traditional and interpretive Middle
Eastern Dance around the U.S. and England. She began her
Middle Eastern Dance studies at the University of Delaware
with Bona Khalil of Egypt while obtaining her B.A. in Anthropology.
She later studied with many master teachers, including choreographer
Ibrahim Farrah, Serena, Elena Lentini, Ghazal Rohani, and
Jehan of New York, Dr. Mo Geddawi of Germany, and Sahra Saeeda
of California.
For eight years, she performed with the jazz dance company
Waves throughout the U.S. and England and was a teacher and
choreographer at the Jazz Dance Center in Philadelphia.
She has appeared numerous times as a featured solo dancer.
She has appeared in the Rakassah Festival East showcase in
Somerset, NJ, in 2001 and 2002. She also danced in a Philadelphia
Opera Company production of Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio.
Her cinematic credits include portraying an Arabian Nights
Dancer in the 1998 film Beloved, starring Oprah Winfrey.
She recently displayed her modern dance abilities in a video
produced by nationally known fitness expert Karen Andes.
She also has appeared in several television programs, including
as a belly dancer and yoga teacher on The Learning Channel's "A
Dating Story." Her classes have been highlighted on
Philadelphia news programs as well.
Valerie has performed Middle Eastern Dance in Egypt, New
York, and Atlantic City, as well as in many local venues.
